EARLY NORTHWEST COAST PEOPLE
Students investigate the culture of the Northwest Coast by constructing a village, creating the families, developing the community roles, and choosing a village leader. When traders and settlers arrive, the villagers must respond to a treaty. To conclude the story, the villagers reaffirm their heritage by holding a First Salmon ceremony. Students build an understanding of the forces that threatened the Northwest Coast culture during the 19th century. The complete unit includes a teacher's handbook, and a CD with reproducible student portfolios, and content slides. The entire unit may be downloaded as an ebook. Grades 3–5. ©2006.
