GOOGLE EARTH<FONT SIZE=-1>TM</FONT>: Navigating Geography and U.S. History Through Interactive Learning
Combine geography skills with core content in U.S. history using Google Earth's dynamic satellite imagery software. Each unit furnishes students with a map overlay file on which they affix placemarkers for specific cities and regions, and use tools within the software to draw routes, highlight specific areas, and measure distances. A culminating activity has students create a presentation (or write an essay) in which they answer a DBQ-style question by evaluating historical markers—placeable primary sources also included with the map file—doing outside research, and making their own markers supportive of their position. For assessment, students submit their own modified map file. The units provide objectives, time requirements, warm-up questions, debriefs, assessments (with rubric), extension activities, student handouts, and two map overlay files (one for students and one as an answer key). The units can work with students both in grades 9—12 and in grades 5—8; for the latter, a section in the teacher pages on differentiated instruction offers tips on how to simplify the unit for younger students.
