Songs from California's history are strung together with simple stories that can be staged in the classroom like musical Reader's Theatre.

Maria’s Birthday re-creates entertainments of the Rancho Period, Ho for Califor-nye-o! involves the crew of a California-bound clipper ship, Pike to Placerville follows Sweet Betsy and Ike down the California Trail, and Days of ’49 tells the “almost true” story of hapless gold seeker Tom Moore. The books include scripts, sheet music, song lyrics, performance suggestions, and ideas for simple costumes and props. The plays last 30–45 minutes and are suitable for small or large casts. The audio CDs (approximately 20 minutes each) are designed to help students learn the words and music—not as accompaniments.
