COMMUNICATING BETWEEN CULTURES
DVD
Connect with a representative to create a custom curriculum for your district.
A series of vignettes illustrates how stereotypical thinking about other cultures can lead to miscommunication.
Two samples: Seeing Jose doing yard work at a nearby house, Fred tries to hire him, because Mexicans are good gardeners. Truth: Jose is Fred’s new neighbor, a medical professional, and not even Mexican. Yoko’s new friends ask him to pick a good Chinese restaurant. Truth: Yoko is not Chinese but Japanese and would rather eat hamburgers and fries. Through viewing and discussion, students learn that following "cultural givens" can often land them in embarrassing situations and put friendships in jeopardy.
