Designed specifically for middle grades, these ten cooperative active-learning lessons and simulations concern the foundations, structure, and operations of U.S. government.

For example, in a role-play exploration of the roots of democracy, mediators try to work out a compromise between the demands of the people and the demands of government leaders. Among the other activities: an "Independence or Not?" debate, writing and trying to pass a bill, dramatizing a cabinet meeting, and creating an overlapping diagram of federal, state, and local government responsibilities. Each lesson includes a historical background essay, activity-specific handouts (including graphic organizers), word banks, complete procedures, and assessments. Lessons run from three to four class periods, and all may stand alone.
