HOW TO RUN FOR POLITICAL OFFICE
An Introduction to Civics, Elections, and the American Political System
DVD (widescreen)
Connect with a representative to create a custom curriculum for your district.
To encourage understanding of and engagement with the political process, a sixth-grade social studies teacher ran for Congress as an independent in 2008—and turned his experiences into this serious civics lesson suffused throughout with a gentle sense of humor.
His not-very-serious election campaign teaches lessons about the qualifications for office, getting on the ballot, representing your district and nation, the importance of third parties, and the roles played by money and the media, but its biggest lesson is that politics is, or can be, for everyone. A brief online teacher’s guide provides discussion topics and activity suggestions.
