In 1993, Paul Theroux began an 18-month circuit of the Mediterranean from one of Hercules's Pillars (Gibraltar) to the other (Ceuta).
He recounts his experiences from the many diverse countries that border the shores of the sea, including war-torn Yugoslavia, the troubled Levant, and the recently liberated Albania, delighted by the politeness of the Turks, amazed by the mountainous highlands in Syria, and touched by the gesture of an Albanian waitress who will not let him pay for his modest meal.
