From the First People to the Forty-Niners, 61 songs reflect the state's multicultural diversity through nine eras of California history.
Arranged for guitar or unaccompanied voices, the songs range from the popular “Cielito Lindo” (the “ay-ay-ay-ay song”) to the less familiar but memorable “Gust of Fall Wind” (sung by Chinese laborers longing for home). Introductory notes place each song in historical context. Non-English lyrics are printed in their original language and in translation. (In the companion audio CD, period instruments accompany soloists, small groups, or a children’s chorus as they sing one or two verses of each song, so even people who can’t read music can learn the melodies.)
