APPLYING COMMON CORE: World History
To develop History/Social Studies Common Core skills, six lessons demand analysis of primary and secondary sources through activities such as Socratic Seminars, short-answer questions, and vocabulary exercises, while three essay assignments require students to write argumentative, informative, and narrative essays. In addition, many lessons draw parallels between past and present: for example, Mesopotamia has students compare an Assyrian king’s victory speech after a battle with the one President Obama gave after his 2012 reelection. Each book in this series addresses the following four standards: Key Ideas and Details, Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas, and Writing Standards.
