Students study primary sources related to ten historical figures (plus Boxers of China) then respond through discussion, writing, or taking part in mock trials.
Each unit features a background article with questions for critical thought followed by 5–9 documents (whole or excerpted with sources given). Documents come as letters, newspaper stories, book excerpts, journal entries, political cartoons, visuals, speeches, and official papers. A guide section summarizes each document and explains its significance. The final section has legal forms, handouts, and fill-in sheets for conducting mock trials of book figures. Nine units focus on Europeans while two (Pancho Villa, the Boxers) fall outside:
- Unit 1—Octavian Augustus and the Formation of the Roman Empire
- Unit 2—Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Angevin Empire
- Unit 3—Martin Luther and the Suppression of the Peasant Revolt
- Unit 4—Oliver Cromwell and the English Civil War
- Unit 5—Peter the Great and the Westernization of Russia
- Unit 6—John Newton and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
- Unit 7—Maximilien Robespierre and the "Republic of Virtue"
- Unit 8—Robert Peel and the Corn Laws
- Unit 9—Sylvia Pankhurst: Advocate or Subversive?
- Unit 10—The Boxer Rebellion and the Westernization of China
- Unit 11—Francisco (Pancho) Villa: Outlaw or Revolutionary?
