Focused on the unifying theme of the quest for freedom throughout U.S. history, these multifaceted lessons center upon close readings of famous political speeches from such notable figures as Patrick Henry, Frederick Douglass, Carrie Chapman Catt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy.
With the aid of graphic organizers, students analyze arguments, examine dissenting perspectives, and reason through multiple viewpoints of historical issues. Developed by Vanderbilt University’s Programs for Talented Youth, each lesson includes text-dependent questions, rubrics, choice-based differentiated projects, formative assessments, social studies content connections, and ELA tasks that require argument and explanatory writing. Aligned to Common Core State Standards (CCSS). While intended for gifted middle grades students, the lessons will work equally well for high school history classes.
