GARRISON AND DOUGLASS

Sources illustrate the different views of the two men and their importance to the history of abolition as a movement. The secondary sources present contrasting views of Douglass; one praises his view of the slavery and the Constitution while the other sees his views as foolish and naive. Concluding exercises have students consider questions such as "Compare and contrast the philosophies of Garrison and Douglass, and explain what these reveal about the spirit of early 19th-century reform in America."
