Based on primary sources, this simulation begins with Lincoln's inauguration and ends with his decision on Fort Sumter.
Working in groups, students role play as the president, General Scott, or one of three cabinet members—Seward, Blair, Welles. After players weigh pros and cons, sample public opinion, and discuss among themselves, they choose one of five options for Lincoln to follow. The booklet has an introductory lecture outline, a day-by-day teaching guide, reproducible action telegrams and communiques, newspaper editorials, historical documents, an options table, and role cards. Players: entire class. Time: 4 class periods.
