In order to learn about life in colonial America in the 1600s, this inventive simulation has students work in pairs to create travel brochures for each of the original 13 colonies.

Students sharpen their research and organizational skills as they gather information about the colony’s geography, climate, natural resources, economy, leaders, government, and Native American residents. After they complete their brochures, the whole class takes part in a “travel expo” where students staff and decorate booths, create travel documents, prepare sales pitches, and book clients for passage to the New World. The recommended schedule is 16 classes, but there are suggestions to shorten or extend the activities.
