SLAVE SYSTEMS, ANCIENT AND MODERN

The primary sources deal with attitudes toward slaves or slave owners in several different societies throughout the past, and with the nature of slave life at different times and places. The secondary sources indicate how slaves were marked off from others and the unique conditions of slavery in the New World. Concluding exercises have students assess questions such as "In what ways has the religious affiliation of slaves often posed a problem for those seeking to regulate and justify slavery?"
