Thirty-two activities blend American history content with basic-to-moderate language skills to engage students who only have limited knowledge of both.
For example, the lesson on the Civil War has students scrutinize famous quotes for punctuation errors, while the Progressive Era lesson involves writing a children’s book on a reform movement. Other lessons concern English skills such as capitalization, subject-verb agreement, vocabulary context clues, irregular verbs, and summarizing. Lessons provide objectives, procedures, handouts (where applicable), and evaluations. Time required: 1–4 class periods.
