Grounded in the belief that students learn best when they are active participants in their own learning, these units improve literacy and social-emotional skills through a narrative that students help create.

Created specifically for preschool-aged children, these three units are aligned with state and national standards. Accompanying each guide is a set of six posters with vocabulary and discussion questions on the back in both English and Spanish. Each unit ends with a series of teacher workshops and professional development articles. The units are ideal for all student populations, including EL and gifted.

The Post Office

Students learn what mail is and become mail carriers in a small town that they create. They then build their own post office and are challenged to solve a problem. The unit culminates in a letter-writing party.

The Restaurant

Students learn what restaurants are and build their own restaurant in which they then work. In the process, they create advertisements and learn about nutrition and money. The unit culminates with students’ families visiting the restaurant.

The Zoo

Students learn what zoos are and create their own zoo in which they build different habitats for the animals and are tasked with keeping their zoo clean. The unit culminates in a grand opening of the zoo.
