Lessons focus on the growth of democracy and economic development in sub-Sahara Africa. Lesson one, "Continent of Crisis," presents the interconnected problems of poverty; ethnic and tribal strife; corruption and authoritarian government; and AIDS. Lesson two, "Democracy and Dictatorship," details the obstacles Africa faces in the effort to establish strong democratic governments. The final lesson, "Africa’s Challenges and the West," considers the West’s relief efforts and what still needs to be done.
