CHINA AND JAPAN RESPOND TO THE WEST

The primary sources deal with China’s growing weakness, and the shifting ideas of reform within Japanese society. They show differing perspectives within China and Japan toward the West. The secondary sources discuss different views of China and Japan in the 1800s. Concluding exercises have students assess questions such as "Compare Japan and China in terms of their overall attitudes toward the West, both what they admired and what they feared."
