Using brief excerpts from Joy Hakim's much-praised Freedom: A History of US, these reproducible close-reading activities develop students' analytical skills while deepening their understanding of U.S. history.
Each of the units offers two to five selected readings and activities, each of which can function as stand-alone exercises or as supplements to the main text. Activities involve close-reading strategies such as "wrecking the text," analyzing word pictures, and annotating passages. Book 1’s units correspond to Freedom’s first nine chapters, including the introduction; Book 2’s units correspond to Freedom’s final ten chapters. Teacher pages identify specific Common Core standards to which each activity is aligned.
