Street vendors. A village doctor. Teenagers dancing at night by the seawall. The ordinary people of Cuba, living their regular lives—in a tropical paradise, or a repressive dictatorship?
Documentary filmmaker Karin Muller discovers a resilient country where the communist government provides excellent education and healthcare, but too little of everything else. Instead, a thriving black-market economy and a tremendous spirit of neighborliness mitigate the communist society’s widespread poverty. Health care, transportation, small businesses, religion, popular entertainment, and urban versus rural life are the main topics. Narration is in English, with Spanish translated to English in very large subtitles visible to the back of the classroom.
