Challenged by an old storyteller to bring back his dying art, students improve their literacy and geography skills by analyzing folk tales from various cultures and ultimately writing their own.
In groups, students read and listen to stories on the accompanying CD; learn universal themes and story components; practice techniques of projection, pace, and dramatic flair; and apply their knowledge to create original folktales to be performed before parents and guests at a culminating Folk Tale Festival. The teacher’s guide contains procedures, summaries of 100 suggested tales, handout masters, and scripts for the CD’s 14 tales; student guides include note-taking strategies, a world outline map, and storytelling tips. The full unit runs for 20 class periods, but is easily shortened.
