Message: The truth about settling the West was more complex and more culturally diverse than is told in traditional lore. Method: Read and discuss high-interest reproducible background essays, then do handout-based activities requiring research, analysis, and judgment. Content: Eight stand-alone units suggest 18 activities covering the concept of “frontier,” the reasons for moving west, finding a route, methods of travel, “selling” the West, environmental impacts, the West in popular culture, and researching the westward movement on websites.
