Re-creating the feeling of a Puritan community in 1640 and showing the effect of strict doctrine on daily life, this award-winning film focuses on the experience of one family who were forced to leave the fold due to a daughter's dissent.
The 18-year-old girl had been captured by Native Americans and when she returns to her community, she sympathizes with their welfare. Unable to tolerate the destruction of Native American homes and beliefs, she befriends the lone survivor of a Puritan campaign and feeds him from community reserves. Put on trial for her actions, she speaks out for the rights of Native Americans.
