SAILORS, MERCHANTS, AND MULETEERS OF THE CALIFORNIA MISSION FRONTIER

The book is richly illustrated with approximately 30 captioned illustrations (most in color) consisting of paintings, historical prints, artifacts, and maps. The authors, experts in archaeology and state history, draw extensively on primary sources to forgo myths and portray people and events as they really were. The book is divided into short chapters with subheads. Spanish terms are italicized, then translated into English. Topics: California’s growth depended upon the movement of people, supplies, and information. Main topics: role of Spain’s navy, Manila Galleons, shipboard life and sailors who settled ashore, foreign merchants, land transport, and early California commerce.
