TALKING MAPS

As voiceover narration describes the precipitating events, tangled alliances, major battles, and political developments, the programs superimpose on a map of Europe (as well as the Pacific Theater, northern Africa, and east Asia, in World War II) primary source footage and photos, using computer graphics to highlight nations, locate fronts, indicate shifting boundaries, and define vocabulary. The programs at times linger on topics such as American doughboys on the Western Front, the Italians in Ethiopia, and the Battle of Midway.
