Topics: the rise of totalitarianism, the Munich Agreement, Einstein’s letter to President Roosevelt, Goebbels’s view of "the best," the Battle of Stalingrad, aims of Japan and Germany, civilian victims during the war, war in an industrial age, the use of chemical weapons, and the reasons for Germany’s defeat. Assessment questions involve asking students to examine how certain fanatical ideas played a part in the war, as well as whether the war could have been avoided or was inevitable.
