Students role-play archetypal denizens of the Old West—a trapper, a Native American, a homesteader, a lawman, and others—and field audience questions in a talk-show presentation designed to show how each contributed to pioneer life.
Based on a class discussion of what constitutes a hero, students vote on which character exhibits the most heroic qualities. The teacher’s guide contains instructions, handouts, background readings, character biographies, and assessments. The complete unit runs for four class periods, including a debriefing activity.
