Ten lessons have students examine symbols, study characterization, analyze point of view, explore setting, and discuss themes. Other activities include replicating Hawthorne’s writing style, writing to various audiences, and responding to literary criticism. Students also keep a reader-response journal, predict the outcome, and rewrite the ending. Grades 9–12. 78 pages.
