Topics: Gods and heroes of ancient Greece, the trial and death of Socrates, war and democracy in ancient Athens, citizen-soldiers of Sparta, Socratic dialogues, views of Athenian democracy, Greeks’ dependence on the sea, Aristotle’s views on slavery, and Thucydides’s account of the Peloponnesian War. Assessment questions ask students to analyze whether Athenian democracy actually was the triumph of liberty and individual rights it is often made out to be, and why Greek civilization did not evolve into a unified state under the control of a single ruler.
